Over the last three years Entomics has developed patent pending insect feed technologies in two areas: containerised on-farm insect factories which turn food waste into black soldier fly larvae for feeding direct to poultry, and a technique for microbial fermentation of larvae to enhance their feed value for salmon farms. Having validated the fundamental principles, Entomics has won large Innovate UK grants to commercialise both technologies. Insects are expected to become an important source of protein in animal feed as the world struggles to meet growing demand for meat, poultry and fish. Regulation is changing to make this possible and this market is likely to grow very fast as industry majors (some of whom are working with Entomics) realise the strategic importance this will have to their businesses.
